Stability and opportunity: building a strong, sustainable future

What happens on Budget day?

The Chancellor delivers the Budget statement to the House of Commons and the leader of the opposition – rather than the shadow Chancellor – then opens the Commons debate with his observations and questions.

Once the Chancellor has returned to his seat following his statement, information is made available to Members of Parliament, the public and the press.

The Chancellor of the Exchequer traditionally makes a Budget Day broadcast to the nation during the evening of Budget Day. The broadcast provides the Chancellor with a further opportunity to outline the intentions and ideas to the public. The opposition parties have an opportunity to respond in their own broadcasts during Budget week.
